BOSTON - Hosting its first of three straight matches, the Boston University men's tennis team fell to UMBC, 5-2, on Sunday morning at the Track and Tennis Center.
The Retrievers swept through doubles and won four of the six singles contests to improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Terriers dropped to 0-5.
After losing a hard-fought 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles with senior Michael Kopelman, classmate Josh Friedman defeated Joseph Adewumi, 6-3, 6-3, in the top singles spot for BU's first point.
Sophomore Jesse Frieder also rebounded from a tough defeat in doubles. First, he and freshman Emilio Teran were unable to overcome a break for an 8-6 loss in the No. 2 slot. Frieder though was able to rally in singles after dropping the first set for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Two other matches went to a third set, but UMBC came out the victor in both contests. Juan Aranzazu won the tiebreaker to defeat Teran at No. 4, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(2).
Junior Alex Hallenbeck won the first set but eventually fell to Daniel Gray, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-7.
The Terriers will next host Bryant on Sunday (Feb. 19) at 12 p.m.
