BOSTON - Hosting its first match of the season, the Boston University men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision against Fairfield on Saturday evening.
The Terriers (0-3) won the doubles point with two tiebreakers in thrilling fashion, but Fairfield (2-0) rebounded with four points in singles action to pull out the team victory. Three of the six singles contests went to a third set, but BU only came away with one win in them.
In doubles after Fairfield won the No. 3 match with an 8-0 sweep, junior Josh Friedman and senior Michael Kopelman edged the Stags' top duo, 7-5, in the tiebreaker for the 9-8 win. Sophomore Jesse Frieder and freshman Emilio Teran had similar success at No. 2, pulling out a 15-13 tiebreaker for another 9-8 BU win.
During singles action, senior Regis Chang dropped the fewest games (4) in a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. Frieder rallied from a set down in the No. 2 match for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Both Teran and junior Alex Hallenbeck rallied to win the second set but came up just short in the third. George Tioutine defeated Teran, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, while Cam Amyot edged Hallenbeck, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Fairfield's other two singles wins came in straight sets, as Dan Sauter defeated Friedman at the top slot, 6-4, 6-4 and Ian Tesmond earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kopelman.
Following the loss, BU will next visit Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 11, with action set to begin at 5 p.m.
