Terriers Continue Streak with 73-50 Victory at Maine

ORONO, Maine - The Boston University women’s basketball game extended its winning streak with a 73-50 victory over Maine in Orono, Maine, on Wednesday night. The Terriers, winners of 11-straight games, move to 18-6 on the season and 11-0 in the America East.

Junior Chantell Alford led BU with 18 points off a career-best six made three-pointers, Young added a trio of treys, giving her 208 made three-pointers for her career, which ties Kristi Dini (2005-08) for the most made three-pointers in program history.

Sophomore Rashidat Agboola added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Terriers while senior Caroline Stewart posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Mo Moran matched her career-high with 11 assists while adding six rebounds and five points.

Leading 5-4 early in the game, BU went on a run in which the Terriers connected on seven-straight three-pointers. Alford hit four treys in a row to give BU a 17-8 lead with 12:50 play. Then, Young connected on three shots from beyond the arc to put BU on top, 28-15 with 8:32 remaining in the first half.

The Terriers were unable to score another field goal over the next eight and a half minutes, as Maine used a 12-2 run to close out the half, with BU’s only points coming off a pair of free throws by Stewart. The teams went into halftime with the Terriers holding on to a 30-27 lead.

BU shot 25.0 percent (9-of-36) from the field and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from beyond the arc in the first half, while Maine shot 38.5 percent (10-of-26) and 25.0 percent (1-of-4). The Black Bears had 27 boards at the half compared to the Terriers’ 18 rebounds.

The Terriers came out in the second half and out-scored Maine 43-23. BU opened the second period with an 8-2 run including two more 3-pointers for Alford. The Black Bears brought the deficit down to seven, 38-31 with a layup by Ashleigh Roberts before the teams traded baskets on the next few possessions.

Agboola gave BU a double-digit lead, 47-36, at 13:12 that the Terriers never relinquished. After a four-minute span without a field goal, Agboola put BU back on the board with a 15-point advantage, 51-36. Maine brought the margin down to 12 against with jumpers from Brittany Williams and Corinne Wellington, before junior Kristen Sims hit her first of two 3-pointers.

The Terriers used an 11-2 run to go up, 66-44, with 2:46 to play. Rookie Troi Melton then provided a spark for BU off the bench, scoring on two consecutive fast-break layups and the Terrier’s last seven points, as BU went on to win 73-50.

BU ended the game with a 38.2 percent (26-of-68) mark from the floor and connected on 11-of-22 (50 percent) of its three-point attempts. Maine finished with a 36.5 percent (19-of-52) clip from the floor while shooting just 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from beyond the arc. After trailing in rebounds at the half, BU finished with 48 boards and Maine concluded with 33 rebounds.
