
Vanderwal Set to Represent Great Britain at Olympic Games

BOSTON - Former Boston University women’s basketball standout Rachael Vanderwal (’06) has been named to Team Great Britain’s women’s basketball team for the London 2012 Olympic Games as announced by the British Olympic Association.
Vanderwal is one of 12 players selected to Team GB, the first time that Great Britain will be represented in women’s basketball at the Olympics. In preparation for the games, Team GB will play against Angola Australia, France and the United States, the reigning gold medalists.
Vanderwal, who is eligible to compete for the British due to her mother being born in Merseyside, England, has spent the past two years playing for the University if Limerick in the Irish SuperLeague. The co-captain has led her team to two consecutive SuperLeague titles as well as the National Cup championship this past February.
The former Terrier finished her career at BU in 2006 as an America East All-Conference First Team selection while ranking in the top 10 in the league in points, rebounds and assists. Vanderwal is the second from BU standout to earn a spot on a women's basketball Olympic team, as Debbie Miller ('81) was selected to represent the United States in the 1980 Olympic Games.
