Women's Basketball Announces 2012-13 Schedule

BOSTON - Highlighted by games against 10 teams that participated in the 2012 postseason, the 2012-13 Boston University women’s basketball schedule has been announced by head coach Kelly Greenberg. In total, the Terriers will play 29 games, with 14 contests taking place on campus, including the home opener against Boston College from the ACC on Friday, Nov. 9, and contests against Big 12 member West Virginia and Big East member St. John’s.
Greenberg has assembled another challenging schedule for the Terriers, as BU will face 11 teams that finished last season with 17 or more wins. The Terriers will take on six teams that received bids to the NCAA tournament, including three that won at least one game during March Madness. BU also faces three teams that earned bids to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and a team that made an appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
For the third consecutive year, BU will open its season at home when the Terriers host Comm Ave rival Boston College on Friday, Nov. 9. Last year, the Terriers evened the all-time series with the Eagles to 9-9 with a 70-62 win at Conte Forum. It was the first time BU had defeated BC since Jan. 31, 1990.
Remaining at home, the Terriers will host a Big 12 school for the first time in program history when BU welcomes one of the league’s newest members, West Virginia, to Boston on Monday, Nov. 12. Last season, in the first meeting between the programs, the Mountaineers handed the Terriers a 78-53 loss en route to finishing the season in the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 24-10 record.
The Terriers will play their third consecutive home game on Friday, Nov. 16, when Richmond comes to town. Last year, the Spiders defeated the Terriers, 72-60. Richmond concluded last season with a 23-9 record and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
BU’s first road trip of the year will be a short one, as the Terriers will make their way across town to visit Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The game marks the 71st all-time meeting between the former conference rivals with BU holding a 39-31 advantage. Last season, the Terriers used 15 3-pointers to down the Huskies, 75-65, at Case Gym.
The Terriers remain on the road for their next three games, starting with a journey to the state of Michigan on Thanksgiving weekend for a pair of games. BU’s first stop in the Great Lakes State will be Ypsilanti, Mich., on Friday, Nov. 23, to face Eastern Michigan for the second time in program history. In the only meeting between the Terriers and the Eagles, BU defeated EMU, 65-59 on Dec. 2, 2006 at the ASU Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. Last season, the Eagles received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after being crowned MAC champions.
The next day, Nov. 24, BU will visit Ann Arbor, Mich., for the first time to play Michigan of the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines and the Terriers only other meeting occurred on Feb. 9, 1980, an 82-76 victory for Michigan in the Lady Lion Classic hosted by Penn State. Michigan finished the 2011-12 season with a 20-12 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
BU concludes it four-game road swing at Rhode Island on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The Terriers lead the all-time series against the Rams, 10-7, including a 71-44 victory last season.
The Terriers return home for games against St. John’s and Massachusetts, on Saturday, Dec. 1, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, respectively. BU and Big East member St. John’s will face each other for the ninth straight season, and 17th time overall. The Red Storm holds a 14-2 advantage over the Terriers, including a 75-38 victory in Queens, N.Y., last season, as St. John’s went on to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Massachusetts then visits Boston for a midweek matchup. The Minutewomen evened the all-time series to 12-12 with their 55-49 victory over the Terriers last season.
Next up for BU will be a trip to the 2011 MAAC champion and NCAA participant Marist on Saturday, Dec. 8. Last season, BU defeated the Red Foxes, 49-36, at Case Gym. Marist went on to finish the season with a 26-8 record and trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Following the trip to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., BU returns home to face Harvard on Monday, Dec. 10. The Crimson advanced to the second round of the WNIT last season and bested the Terriers, 62-57, last year.
The Terriers will conclude their non-conference schedule with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Christmas City Classic presented by Wells Fargo and hosted by Lehigh. BU is set to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Dec. 29, and then take on host Lehigh on Sunday, Dec. 30.
BU begins defense of its 2012 America East regular season championship on Wednesday, Jan. 2, with a trip to Stony Brook, N.Y., to take on the Stony Brook Seawolves. BU remains on the road and travels to West Hartford, Conn., on Saturday, Jan. 5, to face the Hartford Hawks. The Terriers defeated the Hawks in both meetings last season, including a 57-52 win in the regular season finale to clinch the America East regular season championship. The Terriers and the Hawks both participated in the WNIT last season.
The Terriers play their first conference home game against Vermont on Wednesday, Jan. 9, before welcoming Binghamton to Boston on Saturday, Jan. 12, for a doubleheader with the men’s team. BU returns to the road the following week with trips to Maine (Jan. 16) and New Hampshire (Jan. 19).
Next up for BU is a date with the 2012 America East Champion and NCAA tournament participant Albany on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Last season, the Great Danes spoiled BU’s chances of going undefeated in conference play when Albany defeated BU in the penultimate week of the regular season. Following the game against Albany, BU will visit UMBC on Saturday, Jan. 26.
The Terriers begin the second half of the conference slate at home against Harford (Feb. 2) and Stony Brook (Feb. 6) before making the trip to Binghamton (Feb. 9). BU then makes a midweek trip to Vermont (Feb. 13) before hosting New Hampshire (Feb. 16).
BU makes its final America East road trip on Thursday, Feb. 21, to visit Albany before concluding the season with home games against UMBC (Feb. 23) and Maine (Feb. 27).
The Terriers welcome back their top three scorers and 10 players from last year’s squad that went 23-9 and received a bid to the WNIT. BU will be led by two-time America East Player of the Year Chantell Alford along with All-Conference First Team Selection Mo Moran and All-Defensive Team honoree Rashidat Agboola.
Coach Greenberg has also added four newcomers to the Terriers including Katie Poppe and Dana Theobald, who both concluded their high school careers with 1,500-plus career points, Dionna Joynes, a Sporting News Magazine Honorable Mention All-American and Ireland’s U-18 National Player of the Year, Clodagh Scannell.
