ALBANY – Despite three players scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women’s basketball team was edged by Albany, 79-72, Thursday night at SEFCU Arena. The Terriers move to 22-5 on the season and 12-2 in the America East to remain in second place in the conference standings with two games to play.
Senior Chantell Alford eclipsed 20 points for the eighth time this season, as she led the Terriers with 25 points. Junior Rashidat Agboola finished with 19 points while senior Kristen Sims added 14 points. Junior Whitney Turner led the team with seven rebounds while senior Mo Moran chipped in nine points and six assists.
The Great Danes had four players reach double-digits, as Ebone Henry led the team with 23 points. Lindsey Lowrie finished with 17 point. Keyana Williams (15) and Shereesha Richards (10) also scored in double-digits.
The Terriers finished the game with a 47.3 field goal percentage (26-of-55) and a 47.8 percent clip (11-of-23) from beyond the arc. The Great Danes shot 51.0 percent (26-of-51) from the field and 47.1 percent from the 3-point line (8-of-17). Albany also posted a 70.4 percent mark (19-of-27) from the free throw line while BU shot 60.0 % (9-of-15) from the charity stripe.
Albany held a 39-25 advantage on the glass while both teams finished with 17 assists and 14 turnovers.
BU built an early 8-0 lead to open the game before Albany responded with a 14-0 run of its own to grab a 14-8 lead following the under 12 media timeout. Agboola brought BU within four following the break but back-to-back baskets from Henry extended the Great Danes’ lead to 18-10 and forced BU head coach Kelly Greenberg to call a timeout with 10:34 to go.
The Terriers scored the next two baskets following the break before tying the game. Moran sank a 3-pointer for BU and then Mollie McKendrick came up with a steal to feed Alford for a fast-break layup and knot the game at 22-22, as the teams headed to a media timeout with 7:36 to play.
The next four baskets came from behind the arc, although the Terriers managed just one trey from the hands of Sims. Albany built its lead to 10, 35-25, before Greenberg called another timeout with 2:22 remaining in the half. Both teams scored just one basket in the final two minutes of the period, as Albany took a 35-27 lead in to the break.
BU connected on its first seven baskets of the second half, including six from 3-point range to take a 47-45 lead as the teams headed to the 14:50 media timeout. After the break, BU built its lead 51-45 following a basket from Agboola but Albany battled back to tie the game at 52-52 following a jumper from Megan Craig with11:01 to go.
With the game tied, the Great Danes used a 10-3 run to take a 10-point lead, 65-55, following back-to-back 3-pointer from Lowrie with 6:44 to go. BU then used a 5-0 spurt of its own to cut the deficit in half just over a minute later but the Great Danes regained the double-digit advantage off a layup from Keyana Williams with 2:58 remaining.
The Terriers came within six points during the final minutes, and trailed 78-72 following a 3-pointer from Alford with 18 seconds to play, but Albany knocked down three free throws in the remaining seconds to claim the 79-72 victory.
BU will play its final two America East games on its home court. The Terriers will first host UMBC on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m. Saturday’s game will serve as the Terriers’ Senior Day and BU will honors it four seniors, Chantell Alford, Jacqueline Kuczynski, Mo Moran and Kristen Sims, in a ceremony prior to the game.
Saturday is also Girl Scout Day at Case Gym and all Girl Scouts who wear their uniform to the game will receive $3 admission. Girl Scouts can also perform a Cheer with the BU Cheer team at the game (please meet in Case Gym lobby at 12:15 pm to learn the cheer).
