Watch (Race and Ceremony)
The Boston University women's rowing team saw its two-year hold of the Kittel Cup end Saturday morning on the Charles River as the varsity eight boat fell to Syracuse by open water. The Terriers had previously captured the Cup four of the last five years.
Coxed by junior Sarah Specht and stroked by senior Caroline Kimberly, the Terriers' varsity eight boat finished 11 seconds behind Syracuse. The Orange also won the 2V8, 3V8 and V4 races.
In addition to the Kittel Cup, Saturday's races included the spring debut of the BU women's lightweight rowing team, which competed in the Lightweight Beanpot. BU's lightweight varsity eight boat finished in second place behind Harvard-Radcliffe and ahead of third-place finisher MIT.
At the conclusion of the day's races, the lightweight team's two new Resolute Racing shells were dedicated in honor of longtime Terrier supporter Elliot Driben and Boston University's 1974 National Champion lightweight crew. The day concluded with a ceremony highlighted by honorees pouring champagne over the new boats.
The Terriers will continue their openweight and lightweight spring season at Buffalo on April 6.
