Men's Tennis Captures Five Flight Titles at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Highlighted by a combined nine flight final appearances in singles and doubles, the Boston University men's tennis team continued its fall season at the three-day UConn Invitational. Programs participating included the host Huskies, Quinnipiac, Hartford and Bryant.
The Terriers had a stellar performance, posting a 20-6 (.769) record in singles action with freshman Mario Sandoval, freshman Jay Leelavanich, junior Emilio Teran and freshman Lucas Bombonatti all capturing the title in their respective flight.
Seniors Chanon Varapongsittikul and Jesse Frieder won the consolation bracket in the top two singles flights and also teamed together to win the top doubles flight. They defeated duos from Merrimack, Sacred Heart and UConn by a combined score of 24-15.
Sophomore Stefan Lemire finished runner-up in the third singles flight after claiming straight-set wins against Hartford and Sacred Heart. Freshman Jake De Vries also reached the finals at No. 7 but dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Bombonatti for the title.
In the C doubles flight, De Vries teamed with No. 5 singles flight victor Leelavanich. They received a first round bye and then topped a duo from UConn before falling to Quinnipiac in the title match.
BU had one other doubles team reach a final. Sandoval, who claimed the No. 4 singles title with wins over Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Bryant, went 2-1 with sophomore Brandon Phan in the D flight. They flew past the Bobcats and Bulldogs by identical scores of 8-4 before dropping an 8-3 decision to the Huskies.
The Terriers will next visit Bryant on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m.
