After winning his singles flight and finishing runner-up in doubles at the UConn Invitational this past weekend, freshman Mario Sandoval of the men's tennis team has been named GoTerriers.com Student-Athlete of the Week.
Competing in the No. 4 singles flight, Sandoval won five of six sets along with a super tiebreaker to claim the title. He defeated Quinnipiac's Sebastian Barbero, 6-3, 7-6(3) and then battled past Sacred Heart's Kevin Budrawich, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. In the final, he topped Bryant's Josh Rubinstein, 6-4, 7-6(2).
In the doubles D flight, he and sophomore Brandon Phan defeated duos from Quinnipiac and Bryant by identical scores of 8-4 before falling to UConn, 8-3.
The Dallas, Texas native is enrolled in Sargent College of Health Sciences.
