Women's Basketball Falls at Army, 72-45

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Boston University women's basketball team closed out the first half of its Patriot League slate with a 72-45 loss at Army on Wednesday night at Christl Arena. The Terriers drop to 8-14 on the season and 3-6 in conference play while Army improves to 15-5 (7-2 PL).

Sophomore Clodagh Scannell led BU with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while senior Rashidat Agboola had a game-high 12 rebounds. Agboola added eight points on the night while freshman Sarah Hope connected on a trio of triples to post nine points. Senior Danielle Callahan posted seven points and four assists.

Kelsey Minato, the Patriot League's leading scorer, posted a game-high 32 points, including six 3-pointers. Jen Hazlett also reached double-digits with 22 points and led Army with eight rebounds.

The Terriers shot 30.2 percent (15-of-53) for the game and connected on 9-of-25 3-point attempts while going 4-for-10 from the free throw line. Army finished the game with a 46.8 field goal percentage (29-for-62) and shot a blistering 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Black Knights converted 3-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe.

Army won the battle on the boards, 39-36, and had five turnovers on the night while BU had 12.

After a triple for the Black Knights to open the game, the Terriers scored 11 unanswered points, including a pair of treys from Hope, to take an 11-3 lead at the first stoppage called at 16:07. Army came out of the break with a 6-0 run of its own and Hazlett made it a one-point game, 13-12, following a 3-pointer before the under 12 media timeout.

The Black Knights took the lead following a jumper from Minato out of the timeout. Callahan cut Army's advantage to one, but a basket from Hazlett extended the lead with just under seven minutes to go in the half. Minato and sophomore Katie Poppe traded shots from beyond the arc before a 9-2 run by the Black Knights gave them a double-digit lead, 30-20, with 2:44 remaining before halftime.

Minato buried another trey but Hope countered with her third triple of the first half and Scannell added a 3-pointer to send the teams into halftime with Army leading, 33-26.

Army used a 16-2 run during the span of almost seven minutes to open a 54-33 lead in the second half. Turner and Agboola ended the drought for BU with a pair of baskets, as the Black Knights took a 56-37 lead into the under eight media timeout.

The Black Knights added to the margin with a 7-0 run before BU called timeout with 5:17 to play. Hazlett hit back-to-back treys for Army to give the team its largest lead of the game, 69-38, with 3:57 to play. Scannell got BU back on the board with a shot from beyond the arc and then hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night with 2:16 left to play to close out the game for BU.

The Terriers begin the second half of their Patriot League slate on Saturday (Feb. 1) when BU travels to Bethlehem, Pa., to face Lehigh. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
