BOSTON - Continuing with its challenging non-conference schedule, the Boston University women’s lacrosse team is set to face No. 2/3 Maryland on Wednesday (Feb. 19) in College Park, Md. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Wednesday is the first-ever meeting between BU (0-1, 0-0 PL) and Maryland (2-0, 0-0 ACC). The Terps are the Terriers second straight opponent from the ACC. BU is 15-27-1 all-time against the current members of the ACC. BU will face a third ACC member in its regular season finale when the Terriers take on Comm Ave rival Boston College on May 3.
Despite four goals from redshirt sophomore Mallory Collins, BU opened its season with an 18-8 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Henry Field. Collins, the 2012 America East Rookie of the Year who missed all of last season due to an injury, scored four goals in her return to the field to lead the Terriers against last year’s NCAA national champion.
Junior Lindsay Weiner recorded two points (1g, 1a) for BU while freshman Taylor Hardison also posted a goal and an assist for her first collegiate points. The Terriers also received goals from junior Kelsey Marafioti and sophomore Remy Nolan.
Senior Christina Sheridan started in goal for BU and finished with four saves in 17:53 minutes of action. Freshman Caroline Meegan played the remainder of the game (42:07) and posted three saves in her collegiate debut.
Maryland, the 2013 national-runner up, is 2-0 on the season with wins over UMBC (14-3) and Richmond (15-5). The Terps return seven starters from last year’s squad that boasted a 22-1 record and a fifth straight NCAA Final Four berth.
Redshirt junior Brooke Griffin returns for Maryland’s attack after posting 49 goals and 24 assists last year while junior Kristen Lamon (25g) and Halle Majorana (23g) are also back. The Terps’ midfield is led by sophomore Taylor Cummings, an Inside Lacrosse Preseason National Player of the Year candidate and the 2013 AC Freshman of the Year. She recorded 43 goals and 14 assists last season.
Abbey Clipp and Emily Kift have split time in cage for Maryland so far this season. Clipp owns a 3.00 GAA and .500 save percentage while Kift has allowed 5.00 GAA and owns a .444 save percentage.
Cathy Reese is in her eighth season as head coach of Maryland and has won the last five ACC Coach of the Year accolades.
The Terriers will continue its six-game road swing to open the season next Wednesday (Feb. 26), when BU travels to Amherst, Mass., to take on Massachusetts. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
