The Boston University men's rowing team swept Wisconsin on Saturday on the Charles River, winning the Jablonic Cup for the second straight year. The Terriers won the 3V, 2V and varsity eight race over the Badgers.

After defeating Wisconsin earlier in the morning in both the 3V and 2V races, the Terriers' varsity eight boat faced off against the Badgers in the final race of the day and their final race of the duel season. Racing into a steady wind, the varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by sophomore Matt Maginnis, finished with a time of 6:09.9, well ahead of Wisconsin's time of 6:15.9, to complete the sweep and retain the Jablonic Cup. MIT finished a distant third in the race with a time of 6:32.1 and were not part of the Jablonic Cup competition.

"Wisconsin is a team that we have a ton of respect for," said men's head rowing coach Tom Bohrer after the race. "We've had some good battles over the years. We know that every week changes with results and that two weeks is a lot of time between now and the Eastern Sprints. We still need to get faster and we know that Wisconsin will get faster."

Prior to the Jablonic Cup race, BU's second varsity eight won its race by a wide margin. The 2V finished with a very fast time of 6:14.1, ten seconds faster than Wisconsin. Coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by junior Kep Edwards, the Terriers defeated Wisconsin's 2V by open water and actually posted a faster time than Wisconsin's V8 boat, although wind conditions picked up throughout the morning.

In their first race against Wisconsin, the Terriers third varsity eight boat, coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stroked by classmate Tim Giroux, defeated the Badgers by 2.4 seconds.

The competition between Boston University and Wisconsin dates back to 1948 with the Jablonic Cup being introduced into the series in 1989. This Saturday's victory marks the first time since the cup was introduced that the Terriers have won back-to-back Jablonic Cup races. The Terriers won the Jablonic Cup last year for the first time since 2005.

Prior to its competition against Wisconsin, the Terriers' fourth varsity and fifth varsity boats competed against other Charles River schools. BU's 5V defeated MIT by 33 seconds and BU's fourth varsity finished with a time of 6:29.0, well ahead of Northeastern (6:38.8) and Harvard (6:58.3).

The Terriers now have next weekend off from competition before competing in the Eastern Sprints on May 18 in Worcester.
