De Vries Leads Terriers at Brown Invite with Flight Title

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Highlighted by sophomore Jake De Vries' singles flight title victory, the Boston University men's tennis team opened the 2014-15 season at the three-day Brown Invitational over the weekend.
All nine Terriers in individual singles action picked up at least one win with three men collecting at least three victories. On the doubles side, all four duos earned a win with two of them posting a 2-1 record. Other participants included the host Bears, UConn, Colgate, Bowdoin, Merrimack, Bryant and Marist.
De Vries started with a 6-3, 6-3 win against UConn's Josh Palmer and followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Brown's Thomas Nath to reach the Flight 4 semifinals. He easily dispatched Bryant's Ernesto Arguello and held off a late rally by Bryant's Rick Rubenstein for the 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win in the final.
In Flight 2, sophomore Mario Sandoval rebounded from a first round defeat to win the consolation bracket. He first edged Marist's Timo Tanzen, 7-6, 7-6, and then coasted past Colgate's Jake Hirschberg, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the consolation final. On the final day, he topped Bryant's Luke Lorenz, 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Josh Hurd was the third Terrier with three singles wins. Participating in a round-robin flight, he defeated opponents from Bryant, UConn and Colgate before falling to another Bryant competitor.
Besides finishing fourth in singles flight 3 with a 2-2 record, senior Emilio Teran teamted with freshman Mario Nicosia to win the consolation bracket of the flight 4 doubles. Sandoval and sophomore Lucas Bombonatti reached the finals of flight 2 with victories against Bowdoin and Marist but came up just short with an 8-4 loss to Bryant.
The Terriers will return to action on Sept. 26-28 at the UConn Invitational.
