March 2, 2015 | Men's Ice Hockey
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - After helping lead the No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a pair of titles, junior captain Matt Grzelcyk has been named the Hockey East Warrior Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Grzelcyk recorded seven points (3g, 4a) on the week, which consisted of three games against Northeastern in three different buildings.
In Monday's Beanpot title game, Grzelcyk scored two goals, including the overtime winner, to take home tournament MVP honors and help the Terriers claim the Beanpot title for the 30th time in school history.
Grzelcyk tied a career high with three points (1g, 2a) in Saturday's 6-1 triumph over the Huskies at Matthews Arena as BU clinched the Hockey East regular-season title outright for the first time since 2009.
On Friday, Grzelcyk contributed a pair of assists in a 6-5 setback to Northeastern in Agganis Arena.
No other defenseman in the country scored more goals in February than Grzelcyk, as he found the back of the net seven times in the month with the next closest blueliner having scored just four goals. He added five assists for a 12-point month.
Grzelcyk is the fifth different Terrier to earn Hockey East Player of the Week accolades this season joining senior Evan Rodrigues, juniors Ahti Oksanen and Danny O'Regan and freshman Jack Eichel.
The Terriers earned a first-round bye in the Hockey East playoffs and will return to action on Friday, March 13, when they kick off a best-of-three league quarterfinal series at Agganis Arena.
