T12: Golf Wins First-Ever Patriot League Championship
July 17, 2015 | General
This summer, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 5 in this year’s Terrier Twelve is the women’s golf team winning its first-ever Patriot League championship.
BU had been making steady progress as program leading up to the 2014-15 season, and the favorites to win the Patriot League Championship lived up to the expectations and then some. The Terriers bested second-place Lehigh by 10 strokes to claim their first conference crown since 2007 and qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Led by individual champion and two-time Patriot League Golfer of the Month Adela Cejnarova, the Terriers went wire-to-wire to secure the victory. Junior Emily Tillo, also a two-time PL Golfer of the Month, was runner-up while freshman Phyllis Tang took fifth en route to being named the league’s Most Outstanding Rookie.
At the NCAA Regional in San Antonio, Tillo continued her sterling season. She carded three rounds in the 70s to lead BU in perhaps the deepest field of the four regional sites. Tillo also repeated as PL Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named, along with Cejnarova, a WGCA All-American Scholar.
Tillo and the Terriers opened the fall campaign with a convincing victory at the Dartmouth Invitational. BU combined for a 36-hole total of 595 and a second-round score of 291, both of which are program records, while Tillo finished at even par for a three-shot victory. Cejnarova then matched her program record of 69 at the first round of the Jacksonville University Courtyard Classic.
Cejnarova was the lone two-time winner in 2014-15, with her first triumph coming at the Brown Bear Invitational a week prior to the conference championship. It was a dramatic victory, as Cejnarova chipped in for par on the first playoff hole to claim the trophy.
Kristyna Pavlickova's brilliant collegiate career came to a close in 2015, and she leaves BU as one of the pillars of the golf program. Since she arrived on campus in 2011, Pavlickova won five tournaments and led BU to six victories as a team. She finished her final round as a Terrier with a score of one-under-par over the final three holes in San Antonio. In addition, she was honored at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet with the John B. Simpson Award for best demonstrating enthusiasm and leadership.
Four of the five Terriers that teed off in San Antonio will return for the 2015-16 season, including Tillo and fellow senior Sarah Easton.
