WEST POINT, N.Y. - Boosted by the critical doubles point, the Boston University men's tennis team claimed a 4-1 win over Lehigh at Army West Point's Malek Courts on Saturday afternoon.
Winner of two doubles matches and three singles points, the Terriers improve to 8-9 (3-0 PL), while the Mountain Hawks fall to 12-5 (3-3 PL) in an attempt to avenge last year's Patriot League quarterfinal loss to BU.
After juniors Jay Leelavanich and Jake De Vries claimed a 6-3 win in the No. 2 doubles slot, Lehigh pulled out a 6-4 victory at line 3 against senior Stefan Lemire and junior Miguel Cepeda to put the point up for grabs. Junior Lucas Bombonatti and freshman Satyajit Simhadri went to a tiebreak and prevailed 7-6(3) to give BU the early 1-0 lead.
Bombonatti (6-2, 6-1) and De Vries (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) carried the momentum from their critical doubles wins to singles victories at lines 3 and 6, respectively. Lehigh stayed alive in the match by winning in straight sets in the No. 2 slot, but junior Mario Sandoval shut the door by rallying from a set down for the 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.
The Terriers will next remain in West Point and face Army on Sunday at 12 p.m.
