Terriers Withstand Northeastern, 74-73, in Season Opener

BOSTON – Taking the floor at "The Roof" at Case Gym to open the 2017-18 season, the Boston University women's basketball team won its first season opener in five years as it held on against Northeastern, 74-73, Friday night.

- Northeastern had the hot hand to open the game, connecting on its first two shots from beyond-the-arc to grab a 10-4 advantage after the first four minutes.
- Kara Sheftic powered the Terriers though the first quarter, scoring six points to go with three rebounds, though the Huskies shot 50 percent from beyond-the-arc to hold a 17-12 advantage at the of the first.
- BU's offense started to click as it opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 20-17.
- The Huskies battled back to tie it up at 22-all, but BU connected on 58 percent (10-17) of its shots from the floor, while Payton Hauck chipped in eight points during the quarter to put the Terriers ahead, 32-27, at the break.
- The Huskies started the second stanza with an 8-2 run to tie the game up at 35-35. Following a Nia Irving jumper, Katie Nelson reeled off three triples and fellow freshman Tenisha Pressley added in five points to guide the Terriers to a 60-49 lead at the end of the quarter.
- Northeastern stroked an 18-5 run to make it a one-possession game at 67-65 with just under three minutes to go.
- Sophie Beaudry hit back-to-back layups, including converting on and and-1, to give BU a five-point cushion.
- Following a pair of Husky free throws, Hauck put BU's lead back to five after a drive to the basket, though the Huskies cut the lead to one with 22 seconds to go.
- The Huskies missed their ensuing shot before Beaudry swatted the follow-up shot with six seconds left. Northeastern would have one more chance, but its final shot rimmed out as BU held on for the win.
- Payton Hauck set a new career-high with 15 points, hitting on 66.7 percent (6-9) from the floor and 75 percent (3-4) from 3-point range.
- Beuadry followed Hauck with 14 points, while Sheftic finished with 10 points. Beaudry also posted a game-high four blocks.
- Nelson and Pressley netted half of BU's 28 points in the third quarter, as they combined to go 6-for-6 shooting from the floor.
- Nelson led the Terriers with a game-high eight assists and added in nine points.
- Corrine Williams led the team with nine rebounds.
- BU snapped a five-game losing streak to the Huskies and earned its first season-opening victory since 2012.
- Head coach Katy Steding earned her first season-opening victory at the helm of the Terriers.
- Steding also picked up her first win against Northeastern head coach and fellow Oregon native Kelly Cole, who is also in her fourth season.
