Sophomore Paul Luevano will compete at the 2017 NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park on the campus of the University of Louisville. The men's race is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
Luevano is the first Terrier male to qualify for the NCAA Championship event since Rich Peters in 2012. The Los Angeles native earned an at-large spot into Saturday's field thanks to his fifth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 10 in Buffalo, New York. He completed the 10K course in 32:04.3, though his best 10K time came at last year's regional, when he finished 17th with a time of 31:05.44.
Saturday will be the second time this year that Luevano has run this championship course. He finished 22nd at Pre-Nationals with a personal-best 8K time of 23:31.8, and will once again race against the best harriers in the nation at Louisville. Luevano is looking forward to the challenge, saying that it is going to be "one fun race."
This has been another outstanding season for Luevano, highlighted by his victory at the Patriot League Championship. He has four top-10 and three top-five finishes this year and earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for the second straight year.
