HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the varsity eight race for the Jablonic Cup, BU got out to an early lead and seemed to be in control of the race, leading by half a length at the 500 meter mark. But Wisconsin worked their way back over the next 500 meters and pulled even at the halfway point. The two crews traded the lead until Wisconsin pulled ahead by two-seats with 200 meters to go. But the BU 1V, coxed by Mackenzie Hart and stroked by Aleksandar Marinkovski, made a final move and pulled ahead of the Badgers over the final 100 meters. BU finished with a time of 5:54.18, just ahead of Wisconsin's time of 5:55.50.
- The victory was BU's fifth-straight Jablonic Cup win dating back to 2013.
- Earlier in the morning, the BU 2V, coxed by Justin Goucher and stroked by Uros Marinkovic, opened up an early lead over the Badgers and didn't look back. The Terriers were up by six seats a the 500 meter mark and extended it to open water at the halfway point. Wisconsin cut into the lead over the final 500 meters but BU's early lead was too big to overcome as the Terriers won by a length. The BU 2V finished with a time of 5:58.39, ahead of Wisco's time of 6:02.24.
- The BU 3V, coxed by Jeanne Garner and stroked by Peter Roberts, also got off to a good start, leading Wisconsin by a full length at the 500 meter mark. BU extended the lead to open water and cruised to victory by two full lengths (6:00.78 to 6:07.05).
- Also competing on the day, the 5V 4+ took on Harvard in the early morning. The 5V 4+ won its race with a time of 6:44.80, ahead of Harvard's time of 6:49.11. Later in the morning, the BU fourth varsity eight boat took on Harvard's 4V and lost. Harvard finished with a time of 6:06.49 while BU came in at 6:08.91.
- Wisconsin once dominated the competition against BU, winning 16 of 17 races against the Terriers from 1996 to 2012 before BU finally broke through with a win in 2013. BU has now won five straight but Wisconsin still leads the all-time series, 28-8.
- This Saturday was the final competition at DeWolfe Boathouse for eight seniors, who were honored after the race.
- Also racing on the Charles vs. Wisconsin was MIT, who compete against the Badgers each year in a race for the Cochrane Cup, which Wisconsin won on Saturday.
BU will next compete in Worcester, Mass. at the Eastern Sprints on May 14. The Terriers will then prepare for the IRA National Championship Regatta June 2-4 in Sacramento, Calif.
