WORCESTER, MA - The Boston University men's rowing team will compete at the 72nd annual Eastern Sprints Championships on Sunday, sending five boats to compete on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Terriers will look to build on last year's performance when they advanced all five boats to the grand finals, won two bronze medals and placed fifth overall as a team.
The long day of racing begins with heat competitions at 8 a.m. and concludes with the varsity eight grand final at 5:30 p.m.
"Eastern Sprints represents the championship season and what we have worked all year preparing for," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "The dual racing results go out the window as every team in the league has worked to increase speed each week in order to get their fastest boats racing on Sunday. Our squad is prepared and is ready to have their best performance on Sunday."
BU's first race will be at 8:10 a.m. when the Terriers' No. 2 seeded fourth varsity eight boat races against No. 3 Princeton, No. 6 Dartmouth, No. 7 Cornell and No. 10 Syracuse with the top three boats advancing to the grand final.
At 9:00 a.m., BU's No. 4 seeded third varsity eight will face off against No. 3 Princeton, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 10 Cornell, No. 11 Georgetown and No. 16 Rutgers with the top two boats moving on to the grand final.
BU's varsity eight boat is seeded 7th by the EARC and will race at 9:12 a.m. against No. 1 seeded Yale, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 12 Penn, No. 13 Navy and No. 18 Rutgers in the 9:12 a.m. heat with the top 2 boats going to the grand final.
The BU 2V8 is ranked No.3 and will race at 10:36 a.m. against No. 4 Princeton, No. 9 George Washington, No. 10 Columbia, No. 15 Georgetown and No. 16 Holy Cross.
BU will also send out its varsity four boat which will compete at 11:12 a.m. in an unseeded race with no grand final.
In the afternoon, men's heavyweight finals racing will begin with the fourth varsity eight grand final at 1:48 p.m. and conclude with the varsity eight grand final at 5:30 p.m.
After Sunday's competition, the Terriers will head to the IRA National Championship Regatta in Sacramento, Calif. on June 2-4.
