BOSTON – Behind a high-octane offensive performance, the Boston University women's basketball team cruised past Loyola, 75-56, Friday night at Case Gym.
Nia Irving led the Terriers in both scoring and rebounding for the fifth time in the last seven games, notching 21 points to go with seven rebounds.
Katie Nelson also reached double-digit scoring figures with 16 points, while
Sophie Beaudry tabbed 11 points and five rebounds in the victory.
How it Happened
- Irving and Nelson combined for the opening five points for the Terriers, as the score held at five-all midway through the frame.
- Kara Sheftic sparked a 14-2 run as BU used the fast break to grab the lead, scoring 10 of its next 14 points in transition.
- Nelson connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to thrust BU ahead, 19-7, at the end of the first quarter.
- Loyola cut the deficit to single digits with a 5-0 run before Nelson, Naiyah Thompson and Beaudry banked in three straight layups to put the score at 29-14 with 3:44 remaining before the break.
- The Terriers closed out the quarter by beating the buzzer once again, as Irving layed in a feed from Nelson to send BU to the locker room with a 40-22 command.
- BU's offense fired on all cylinders in the first half, as it shot 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the floor and 60.0 percent (3-for-5) from beyond-the-arc.
- Beaudry carried BU to start the third, putting in three of its first four points as the score held at 45-25 with 6:16 left in the third.
- The Greyhounds reeled off a 7-1 run before Corrine Williams netted the seven points for the Terriers, and Irving followed with the next six to put the score at 59-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
- The game was never in question in the final frame as BU rolled to a 19-point victory.
Game Notes
- BU shot 72.7 percent (8-for-11) in the third quarter, its highest shooting percentage in a single quarter this season.
- The defense held Loyola to just a 27.3 percent (18-of-66) shooting clip, marking the lowest opponent shooting percentage of the season.
- Nelson was a perfect 3-for-3 from deep in the first half and finished 4-for-5 from beyond-the-arc.
- The Terriers scored 16 of their 21 points in the second quarter in the paint.
- Friday's win marked BU's third straight triumph over the Greyhounds, and matched its longest win streak in the series since taking three straight in 2014.
- The 19-point victory matched BU's largest margin of victory in the series. It's previous 19-point victory came in a 74-55 decision on Feb. 15, 2014.
