The Boston University men's cross country team will compete at the 2018 Patriot League Championships on Saturday at Bucknell. The men's race is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
Ranked second in the Patriot League in the new Cross Country Rating Index, the Terriers have finished third each of the last two years and will return four of their top five scorers from the 2017 meet. That includes reigning individual champion Paul Luevano. The junior will look to become the first Terrier since Jochen Dieckfoss, who won four consecutive America East championships, to repeat as conference champion.
"Paul is defending champion, but I told Paul that he has to come in as if he's never won this before and just compete," head coach Paul Spangler said.
In addition to Luevano, seniors Alexander Seal and Johnny Kemps, along with junior Greg Pelose, will look to improve upon their top-25 finishes from a year ago. That quartet will be bolstered by redshirt sophomore Brett Davidson, who missed last year's meet due to injury. The top of the Terrier lineup certainly has experience and can run with the likes of Luevano near the front of the pack.
"I think Alex and Brett can run with Paul," Spangler said. "They've done it in practice and they've been right behind him in races, so that's an advantage for us up front. Our 1-4 guys are all upperclassmen and have been in this environment before, and it showed at NCAA Pre-Nats. However, we need our fifth runner to come through if we're going to have a shot on Saturday."
While those five harriers have garnered much of the attention, the Terriers' depth could make a big difference in the race for the team title on Saturday.
"Being a smaller race and also having the ability to run more than seven guys gives us an advantage," Spangler said. "At Pre-Nats, our fifth, sixth and seventh runner all had an off day at the same time. If that happens at the conference meet, we can run 12 guys and have a lot of depth."
The Terriers entered the season with high expectations that included being ranked fifth in the Northeast Region by the USTFCCCA. However, the ultimate goal for this team is to emerge victorious on Saturday.
"Going into the season our goal was to win conference," Spangler said. "We've been banged up a bit throughout the year, but things have started to come together at the right time. The most important thing is the team. Our goal as individuals is not to win the race. Our goal as individuals is to do our part and run as best we can for the team."
