BOSTON - Coming off a close loss to Dartmouth last weekend, the Boston University men's rowing team will look to rebound this Saturday when they take on Syracuse and Columbia on the Charles River.
Racing will begin at 7:20 a.m. with the varsity 4 race followed by the 3V8 at 7:50 a.m and the 2V8 at 8:20 a.m. The competition will conclude with three-boat cup racing when the Terriers' No. 9 varsity eight takes on No. 14 Syracuse for the Conlan Cup and No. 13 Columbia for the Lusins Trophy at 8:50 a.m.
Last year, racing on Onondaga Lake in Liverpool, N.Y., BU finished second behind winner Syracuse, who won the Conlan Cup over BU for the first time since 2012. The Terriers finished ahead of third-place Columbia, winning the Lusins Trophy for the seventh-consecutive year.
The Conlan Cup between Boston University and Syracuse is named after the founder of Boston University rowing Jim Conlan who started the program as a student in 1937. BU has won the race 18 times and Syracuse 33 times.
The Lusins Trophy between BU and Columbia is named for John "Doc" Lusins, captain of the 1959 Columbia University crew and a lifelong fan of rowing. The trophy, which has a unique bow ball design, was established in 2003 by Doc's son Matthew Lusins, an oarsman at Boston University ('98). Boston University has won the race 22 times and Columbia 12 times.
The BU 1V is coming off a close loss to No. 8 Dartmouth last weekend in Hanover, N.H. The Terriers got off to a good start but the Big Green came back and took the lead from BU and held on for the victory (5:20.65 to 5:22.96).
A live radio call of Saturday's races can be heard starting at 7am by calling (712) 432-4448.
After this this weekend's racing, the Terriers will travel to Baraboo, Wisc. to face old rival Wisconsin for the Jablonic Cup on April 28 in their final race of the season before Eastern Sprints on May 13.
