BOSTON – Despite senior
Brittany Younan producing a season-high four RBIs, the Boston University softball team dropped the weekend series opener at home to defending Patriot League champion Lehigh, 8-5, on Saturday afternoon.
With the help of two homers, the Mountain Hawks claimed their fifth straight to improve to 11-17 overall and 6-1 in Patriot League play, while the Terriers fall to 18-17 (2-2 PL).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lehigh struck first in the opening inning when Mary-Hannah Smith hit a two-run blast to left center for a 2-0 lead against freshman and reigning PL Pitcher of the Week Ali Dubois (12-6).
- The Terriers had two on base in both the first and second but ended each inning with a strikeout against Parker Boyd (9-8).
- BU broke through in the fourth on a bases-clearing double by Younan that was set up by senior Jilee Schanda's single, a Lehigh throwing error and freshman Jen Horita's walk.
- Lehigh quickly retook the lead with three runs off three singles and a walk against Dubois in the top of the fifth to prompt a pitching change.
- Sophomore Lizzie Annerino prevented further damage by getting a pair of outs, but Lehigh scored two more in the sixth against her and sophomore Kali Magane on three hits.
- Trying to mount a rally, Horita drew a walk and advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error before scoring on Younan's two-out RBI single.
- Heinen followed with another single to put two on, but Boyd got a routine grounder to end the threat.
- Allyson Dibsie added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a two-out homer to left against Magane.
- Senior Emma Wong singled to start the bottom of the seventh and eventually scored on junior Alexa Ponce's sac fly to cut into the deficit before Boyd claimed her seventh strikeout of the game to seal the win.
