July 28, 2018 | Women's Lightweight Rowing
POZNAN, Poland - Rising junior Sarah Maietta of the Boston University women's lightweight rowing team won gold competing for the United States at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships on Saturday. Maietta was part of USRowing's lightweight women's pair that finished first by more than nine seconds to take home the gold medal in Poznan, Poland.
Maietta, along with teammate Caroline O'Brien from Georgetown University, dominated the event, pulling away from the field early and cruising to a first place finish by open water. The US boat finished with a time of 7:43.62 while Germany won the silver (7:53.95) and Italy took bronze (7:58.44).
"We sweep all year long in college, and we know how strong U.S. women's sweep is," Maietta said after the race. "We knew we had a good chance in this event. I told her from the get-go, 'let's go out here and try to win it,' and we approached every race like that."
Also competing for USRowing, rising senior Janice Hagerman competed in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls. Hagerman helped the US boat advance to the finals and finished sixth overall with a time of 7:12.07.
In addition to Maietta and Hagerman, Boston University lightweight rowing coach Malcolm Doldron was a member of the USRowing U23 National Team coaching staff. Doldron served as the lightweight pair and quad coach in Poznan. This was the second-straight year that Doldron was named to the United States' U23 staff.
As a team, the U.S. won five gold medals and eight overall medals at this year's event, setting U.S. records for both the most gold and overall medals at a World Rowing Under 23 Championships. The five gold medals also put the U.S. on top of World Rowing's gold medal standings ahead of Italy and Great Britain with three each. In the overall medal count, the U.S. tied the Brits with eight total medals, only behind Italy's 12.
