Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Defeat Maine, 3-0

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore goaltender Corinne Schroeder made 20 saves en route to her second shutout of the season as the Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

For the second time this weekend, Schroeder and the Terrier defense combined to stymie the Maine (12-8-1, 5-8-1 WHEA) offense. The Black Bears nearly spoiled the shutout with a last-second power-play opportunity, but Schroeder made a nifty pad save on a point-blank chance.

BU (9-6-5, 6-5-4 WHEA) has not allowed more than one goal in each of its last six games, with Schroeder between the pipes for five of those contests. This was the second time during that stretch that she has held an opponent scoreless, but she did not finish the 8-0 victory at RIT on Dec. 8. Schroeder lowered her goals-against average to 1.75 and improved her save percentage to .936.

Sophomore Jesse Compher assisted on redshirt junior Sammy Davis' game-winning goal in the second stanza before lighting the lamp herself to complete a two-point afternoon. Junior Natasza Tarnowski also found the back of the net while freshman Kaleigh Donnelly recorded a career-best two assists, both of which were primary helpers. Senior Connor Galway and junior Abby Cook also added an assist apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU earned a five-minute power play late in the first period after Maine's Tereza Vanisova was given a game disqualification for kicking at a Terrier skater, but the Black Bear penalty kill kept the Terriers off the board.
  • Davis opened the scoring 3:02 into the second period. She intercepted a Maine clearing attempt at the left faceoff circle before firing a shot on goal that Carly Jackson turned aside. Compher corralled the rebound and sent a shot off the left post, but the rebound caromed right to Davis at the right post and she knocked the puck into an open net for her 12th goal of the campaign.
  • Compher extended the lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal at 7:36 of the middle frame. Cook dished the disc to Donnelly at the left circle, and Donnelly quickly whisked the puck to Compher in the slot. The sophomore made no mistake for her 12th goal of the year.
  • Tarnowski made it 3-0 with 6:31 remaining in regulation. Galway gathered a loose puck behind her own net and sent the puck up the boards to Donnelly, who then chipped it up ice and into the offensive end. Tarnowski raced past a Black Bear defender, got to the puck first and then drove to the net before tucking the puck inside the right post and past Jackson for her third goal of the season.

GAME NOTES

  • The Terriers outshot the Black Bears, 42-20.
  • Schroeder has not allowed a 5-on-5 goal in the last 313:11 she has played.
  • Compher collected her 11th multi-point game of the season.
  • Donnelly recorded the second multi-point game of her brief collegiate career.
  • BU finished the weekend a perfect 5-of-5 on the power play.
