Terriers Take Third at PL Championships

RESULTS

Annapolis, Md. - Highlighted by four gold-medal victories and 11 overall medals, the Boston University women's track & field team finished tied for third at the 2019 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championship, which concluded Sunday at Navy's Wesley Brown Fieldhouse.

The Terriers were led by senior Lovie Burleson, who won gold in the long jump with a 5.89 meter effort and silver in the triple jump (12.02m) and was named PL Field Athlete of the Meet. 

Navy won the league title with a whopping 194.5 points, well ahead of second-place Army (142 points) while BU and Bucknell tied for third with 125 points.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Sophomore Bridget Chiaravalle won gold in the 60m hurdles finals with a time of 8.82, setting a new personal best. Senior Kennedy Jones finished second with a time of 8.895 to win silver just ahead of Breanna Mealer from Navy who took bronze (8.898).
  • Senior Lovie Burleson won gold in the long jump with a 5.89 meters (19'4") effort, outdistancing Alexandra Curtain of Holy Cross (5.87m) on her final jump of the event.  After the meet, Burleson and was named PL Field Athlete of the Meet. 
  • Junior Abigail Gugel had an incredible meet. On Saturday she took home gold in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:07.95, winning the event by more than five seconds and shattering her previous personal best of 17:43.99. On Sunday, Gugel won bronze in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:53.85.
  • Senior Kennedy Jones won gold in the triple jump with a 12.38 meter (40'7.5") while Lovie Burleson took silver (12.02m).
  • Junior Leah Fowlkes won silver in the 200m dash with a time of 24.46, just behind winner Calli McMullen of Army West Point (24.38). Fowlkes also won bronze in the 500m dash with a time of 1:14.41.
  • On Saturday, senior Sarah Cicchetti finished just off the medal stand in fourth place in the weight throw with a throw of 17.39 meters (57'.75"). 
  • Junior Ava Gruzen had a strong performance in the pentathlon, finishing fifth with a new personal best of 3,229 points to earn the Terriers four points in the standings.
  • In the final event of the meet, the 4x400 relay team of Leah Fowlkes, Anna Foreman, Jordan Coverson and Ebony Brown won silver with a time of 3:48.09 just behind first place Navy (3:46.80). With the second-place finish, the 4x400 relay team earned eight points and moved the Terriers into a tie with Bucknell for third place in the team standings.
