Terriers Deliver Payback with 72-65 Come-From-Behind Win over Loyola Maryland

BOSTON – Highlighted by junior Max Mahoney's seventh double-double of the season and a game-changing 3-pointer from freshman Jonas Harper, the Boston University men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat Loyola Maryland, 72-65, on Saturday evening at Case Gym.
Shooting 64.0 percent in the second half, the Terriers (13-16, 6-10 PL) moved to 7-0 all-time at home against the Greyhounds (10-19, 6-10 PL), who were seeking their first-ever sweep after rallying from a 13-point deficit for an 81-73 OT home win back on Jan. 16. Mahoney led BU with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Isaiah Hart posted 25 points and six assists for Loyola.
TURNING POINT

TURNING POINT
- Facing a 63-61 deficit, BU finished the final 95 seconds on an 11-2 run with four different Terriers finding the hoop, as the Greyhounds went 1-of-5 with a costly turnover.
- Mahoney tied the game for the sixth and final time with a layup at 1:35.
- After Kenneth Jones missed an attempt from behind the arc on Loyola's next possession, redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino found Harper near the corner for just BU's third 3-pointer of the game.
- Harper then swiped the ball away from Patriot League leading scorer Andrew Kostecka and hit two free throws.
- Kostecka followed with a layup, but Vilarino and junior Tyler Scanlon hit two free throws apiece over the final 22 seconds to seal the win.
- After nearly three minutes of scoreless action, Casmir Ochiaka scored the game's first basket to spark a 9-2 spurt capped by Hart's trey at 15:04.
- Freshman Jack Hemphill drained a short jumper to cut the deficit to 9-6, but the Greyhounds went on a 13-2 run finished by Kostecka's two free throws at 7:34.
- Facing a 28-16 deficit with 2:41 left in the half, Vilarino flushed a 3-pointer and later hit a layup before the buzzer to help the Terriers net 12 of the final 16 points to pull within four (32-28) entering the locker room.
- Mahoney started the second half by finding Vilarino for a layup and free throw before giving BU its first lead of the game own bucket at 19:01 (33-32).
- Hart completed a 3-point play at 16:50 to retake a 37-36 advantage, but Scanlon and Mahoney combined for the next eight points to pull back ahead, 44-37, at 13:05.
- The Greyhounds trailed, 46-40, with 10:32 remaining before Hart heated up with a 3-pointer and 3-point play to give Loyola a 53-48 lead at 7:57.
- Jones drained Loyola's fourth and final 3-pointer at 5:49 to grab a 56-52 advantage that was erased by back-to-back layups from Mahoney and Scanlon.
- Scanlon found McCoy for a 3-pointer at 3:12 and 59-57 lead, but Kostecka hit two free throws on the next possession.
- Ochiaka used a layup and then two free throws to give Loyola its final lead, 63-61, at 1:53 before the Terriers pulled away.
- Mahoney earned back-to-back double-doubles for the first time in his career after totaling 11 points and 12 rebounds in Monday's 70-60 win at Holy Cross.
- Scanlon netted 14 points with three steals and is now 31 away from the 1,000-point milestone, while Mahoney is 40 away from hitting the mark.
- Vilarino and McCoy combined for 25 points, while Harper had seven of BU's 13 points off the bench.
- Kostecka was held five points his season-scoring average at 16 off 6-of-12 FG (0-of-5 3FG) and 4-of-4 FT.
- BU out-rebounded Loyola, 33-21, and limited the Greyhounds to just two second-chance points after allowing 18 in January's loss.
- The Terriers finished 28-of-51 FG (.549) and 13-of-19 FT (.684), while the Greyhounds went 25-of-53 FG (.472) and 11-of-13 (.846).
- BU now leads the all-time series, 10-6, with the home team winning each of the last three seasons.
- Currently 2-3 this season in avoiding sweeps, the Terriers will have one more opportunity to avenge an earlier conference loss when they visit Lafayette on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at 4:30 p.m.
- The Leopards shot 54.4 FG% and outscored the Terriers' bench, 34-10, to post a 79-72 win back on Feb. 6.
- Scanlon netted a career-high 28 points in the loss.
