BU in the NHL
BOSTON - The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs will begin on Wednesday and eight skaters and three coaches who played at Boston University will be competing for hockey's top prize.
BU is represented in all four pods in the playoffs bracket on teams in all four divisions - Boston (Atlantic), Columbus & Pittsburgh (Metropolitan), Nashville (Central) and Colorado (Pacific).
Five former Terrier standouts are with the Boston Bruins as recent addition Charle Coyle joined defensemen Matt Grzelcyl and Charlie McAvoy and assistant coaches Jay Pandolfo and Joe Sacco. The Bruins open up at home on Thursday (April 11) against Toronto. The other half of that bracket features Adam Clendening and the Columbus Blue Jackets against the top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning.
In the other side of the Eastern Conference, head coach Mike Sullivan is in search of his third Stanley Cup title with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who take on the New York Islanders in the opening round.
Over in the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche with Matt Nieto and Colin Wilson will kick off their playoffs at Calgary. The Nashville Predators won the Central Division title and also have two BU alums on their roster in Nick Bonino and recent signee Dante Fabbro, who became the 20th former Terrier to play in the NHL this season.
A Terrier has been on the Cup-winning team in each of the past three years as Sullivan and Bonino won back-to-back titles with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017 before Alex Chiasson became the ninth Terrier to hoist the Cup as a player or coach last season with the Washington Capitals.
