HOW IT HAPPENED
Varsity eight
In the varsity eight race for the Arlett Cup, BU's 1V, coxed by junior Sean Dooling and stroked by senior Nils Kocher, fell behind by three seats to the Huskies over the first 500 meters. The Northeastern lead stayed at three seats for most of the race but over the final 100 meters the Terriers made a move and pulled even. Both boats crossed the line seemingly together but it was Northeastern by a bow ball, winning by .2 seconds (5:49.4 to 5:49.6) in a very exciting race. With the victory, Northeastern won the Arlett Cup for the second-consecutive year after BU had held the cup from 2015 to 2017.
Second varsity eight
The second varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman William Mulhall and stroked by Paul Giroux, fell behind Northeastern by four seats over the first 500 meters and could not close the gap over the 1500 meters. Northeastern increased its lead throughout the race and won by open water (5:55.9 to 6:02.6).
Third Varsity eight*
The third varsity eight, coxed Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Andrew Marsh, fell behind Northeastern by three seats at the 500 meter mark. The Terriers cut into the lead and were even at the MIT Boathouse. The BU 3V8 roared ahead of NU by a half length with 500 meters to go but Northeastern cut into the lead over the final 100 meters and the two boats were separated by a bow. BU crossed the line first with a time of 5:46.4 while NU finished in 5:46.7. After the race, Northeastern protested that BU had crossed into the Huskies lane and the Terriers were assessed a two-second penalty.
Varsity Four
In BU's final race of the day, BU's varsity four boat, coxed by freshman Catherine O'Neal and stroked by sophomore Max Sullivan, pulled ahead of Northeastern early and was able to maintain its lead throughout the race. The 4V "A" boat finished well ahead of the Huskies, winning 6:50.6 to 7:08.2. The BU V4 "B" boat, coxed by Grace Heavey and stroked by Benjamin Hunnewell finished third with a time of 7:08.2.
