Sophomore Terrier Trio Earns All-Patriot League Team Honors
May 3, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After helping lead the Boston University men's tennis team to its fifth Patriot League semifinal appearance in six years, three sophomores have earned All-Conference Team accolades, the league office announced Friday afternoon.
Both David Bogatin (first) and Pete Siozios (second) collected their first-career awards, while Owen Lu was named to the second team for the second time. BU was only one of two teams alongside the reigning PL champion Navy Midshipmen in having three student-athletes recognized. The announcement marks the first time since 2011 and third time overall in the 21st century that three Terriers were recognized by a conference with the other occurrence taking place in 2007.
A native of Los Angeles, California, Bogatin led the Terriers with 14 singles win for the year, including a 3-1 mark at No. 1 singles. After collecting five wins at line 2, he moved up to the top spot a week before the start of the PL tournament. He then claimed a pair of straight-set victories against fellow All-PL First Team member Ethan Jacobs from Bucknell and most impressively dropped just seven games against the 2019 PL Player of the Year, Navy's Andrew Ton, in the PL semifinals. He also recorded notable wins at line 2 against Boston College, UAB and Siena, while also tallying 11 wins in doubles.
Lu finished second on the team with 12 singles victories while also posting a team-high 16 doubles wins. The Guangzhou, China, native earned a notable win at line 1 against fellow All-PL Second Team member from Lehigh (Harry Wang) along with victories against Fordham, Fairfield, Siena and Sacred Heart. In the No. 2 slot, he posted a win against Bucknell in the PL quarterfinals. In doubles, he teamed with Bogatin for No. 1 wins against Bucknell, Colgate, Fordham and Siena.
Siozios missed the fall but had a standout spring, posting a team-high 10 singles wins in dual action, highlighted by an 8-3 mark at line 3. The Hyde Park, New York, native had a key win against fellow All-PL Second Team member, Greg Durham (Navy), and also collected victories against Yale, Colgate, Lehigh, Army, UNC Asheville and UAB. He also claimed a win at line 5 against Boston College and totaled six combined doubles wins with four different partners.
The three men will all return next season with the rest of the Terriers that saw action in the PL tournament.
