
Kawasaki Leads Terriers in Opening Round of NCAA Regional

CLE ELUM, Wash. - Freshman Hanako Kawasaki fired a one-under 71 to lead the Boston University golf team in the opening round of the Cle Elum Regional of the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Regional Championships hosted by the University of Washington at Tumble Creek Club.
Kawasaki ended the afternoon tied for 15th, just five shots behind the leaders. She made five of the Terriers' nine birdies on Monday, which ranked eighth in the entire field. That included a stretch of three birdies over the final four holes of the back nine, which is where BU began its round. Kawasaki then bounced back from two straight bogeys with her final birdie of the day on the par-5 8th hole. She played the par-5s at -3 on Monday, tied for third in the 96-player field.
BU combined for a score of 307 on Monday and finished the day in 16th place, just five shots back of Sacramento State in 15th and well ahead of New Mexico State (321) in 17th position. No. 1 USC leads the 18-team field with a total of 281.
Senior Megan Carter tied for 46th with a 75 thanks to a trio of birdies. She was even through her first five holes and played the par-3s at -1, which was second-best on the day. Junior Zhangcheng Guo also scored below 80 on Monday, shooting 79. Junior Abby Parsons collected a birdie en route to an 82 while sophomore Katerina Doleckova recorded an 84.
The Terriers will return to Tumble Creek for round two on Tuesday.
