Terriers Finish 8th at IRAs

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Highlighted by a first-place finish in the 2V8 and V4 petite finals, the Boston University men's rowing team competed in Day 3 of the IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday. BU finished eighth as a team in the IRA Ten Eyck Points Championship standings with 136 points, a nine point improvement over 2018.
The Washington Huskies won the Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall regatta champion for the third-consecutive year with 207 points while the Yale Bulldogs won the heavyweight eight title.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VARSITY EIGHT
• In the petite final race, the No. 8 seeded Terrier' took on No. 5 Brown, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 10 Cornell, No. No. 11 Dartmouth and No. 14 Stanford. Brown and BU pulled ahead of the pack at the 500m mark with Brown ahead of BU by 2two seats. The BU V8, coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Nils Kocher, continued to chase Brown at the 1000m mark with Syracuse in third place. Brown extending its lead to three seats to a half length over the second half of the race and the three leaders maintained their spots down the stretch without much movement. Brown finished first with a time of 5:42.89, followed by BU (5:44.20) and Syracuse (5:44.68). With the second-place finish in the petite final, the 1V finished the year eighth in the country.

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
• In the second varsity eight petite final, the No. 9 seeded Terriers took on No. 7 Dartmouth, No. 8 Northeastern, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 11 Navy and No. 12 Cornell. After a very even start BU moved ahead of the pack by tow seats at the 500 meter mark. The BU 2V, coxed by William Mulhall and stroked by Andrew Marsh, stretched its lead to a full length at the 1000 meter mark ahead of second place Navy. The Terriers maintained a length lead with 500 meters to go before Dartmouth made a late push but it was to late to catch the BU 2V as the Terriers cruised to victory with a time of 5:50.12, ahead of second-place Dartmouth (5:51.91). With the first-place finish in the petite final, the 2V finished the year seventh in the country.

THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
• In the petite final, the No. 7 seeded third varsity eight boat took on No. 6 Syracuse, No. 8 Dartmouth, No. 9 Northeastern, No. 10 Navy and No. 12 Wisconsin. Northeastern got out to an early lead with Syracuse and BU battling for second at the 500 meter mark. BU, coxed by Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Andrew Dellechiaie,pulled away from Syracuse for second and began to chip away at the NU lead over the middle 1,000. With 500 meters to go BU pulled within two seats of the Huskies but could not close the gap any further as Northeastern finished first with a time of 5:52.36 followed by BU (5:54.36) and Syracuse (5:56.50). With the second-place finish in the petite final, the 3V finished the year eighth in the country.

VARSITY FOUR
• In the unseeded varsity four petite final, the Terriers faced Harvard, Marist, Dartmouth, Holy Cross and Navy. Harvard got out to an early lead but the BU V4, coxed by Catherine O'Neal and stroked by Jack Schofield, caught the Crimson at the 500 meter mark and pulled ahead. The Terriers stretched their lead to a full length at the 1000 meter mark as Marist passed Harvard and challenged BU for the lead. The Terriers answered Marist down the stretch and finished first with a time of 6:31.60. With the first-place finish in the petite final, the V4 finished the year seventh in the country.

WASHINGTON AND YALE - 2019 IRA CHAMPIONS
• The Washington Huskies won the Jim Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall points champion with 207 points for the third-consecutive year and the 12th time in the last 13 years. The Huskies finished second in the varsity eight grand final, behind heavyweight eight champion Yale for the second-consecutive year,
