Terrier Twelve - #12: Women's Tennis Claims Two Major Awards, Helps Sheehan Reach Milestone

June 21, 2019

For the 12th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Kicking off things at No. 12 in this year's Terrier 12 is Shelly Yaloz's impressive debut season for the women's tennis team, as the rookie claimed a pair of major Patriot League year-end awards and helped head coach Lesley Sheehan reach the 400-win milestone.

A native of Queens, New York, Yaloz made an immediate impression in her debut at the Quinnipiac Fall Invitational, winning the B Singles Flight with four straight-set victories and the A Doubles Flight with four wins alongside sophomore Emily Kim. She would carry the momentum from the strong performance in Connecticut to PL Rookie and Doubles Team of the Year honors.

Yaloz finished the year with a team-high 20 victories in singles action, collecting notable victories in the top two slots against Army's two-time PL Player of the Year Ana Joyner, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale and Navy. She also teamed with Kim for a 25-7 doubles mark, as the duo won their final eight matches together and claimed BU's first Doubles Team of the Year award since 2016.

In total, six Terriers recorded double-digit wins during singles play with sophomore Lily Burchell collecting 20 wins as well. Kim tallied 19 and was followed by sophomore Katya Martens (17), senior Sabrina Faybyshev (14) and senior Remi Ramos (12). Ramos posted five of her wins at line 1 in dual play to join Yaloz in earning All-PL First Team accolades. Both Kim and Burchell were named to the second team for their efforts.

In other seasons highlight, the team defeated Dartmouth for the first time since 2011 in an annual series and went 6-0 at home with a 6-1 victory over former America East foe Binghamton on February 16. That victory marked No. 400 for Sheehan ('84), who has led the program her entire coaching career and now sits at 410 wins with 26 conference titles.

A two-time NCAA singles tournament qualifier and BU Athletics Hall of Fame member, Sheehan added another honor to her collection when she was formally inducted into the USTA New England Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday, June 8.
