Cross Country Teams Ready for Battle in Beantown
September 19, 2019 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
After a strong showing at the Harry Lang Invitational to open the 2019 season, the Boston University's men's and women's cross country teams will look to continue their success in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College at Franklin Park on Friday, Sept. 20. The women's race will begin at 3 p.m., with the men to compete at 3:30 p.m.
BU took 10th on the men's side last year thanks to Paul Luevano's 25th-place performance while Jessica Kellar paced the women with a 29th-place effort in just her second collegiate race. The Terriers will tangle with several of the top teams in the nation, including No. 3 Washington, No. 13 Syracuse and No. 21 Arkansas in the men's event as well as No. 25 Dartmouth and No. 27 Syracuse in the women's meet.
The women's squad is coming of a first-place finish two weeks ago at Colgate that propelled them to No. 14 in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region rankings. The Terriers placed five harriers in the top 11 and collected 26 points, more than half that of second-place Syracuse (53 points). Senior Abigail Gugel finished the 4.8K course in first place with a time of 17:11.2 and was subsequently named Patriot League Runner of the Week on Sept. 10.
Sophomore Jessica Kellar followed Gugel in second place with a time of 17:16.5 while freshmen Sophia Jacobs-Townsley and Andrea Claeson made impressive debuts, placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Junior Corinne Batsu completed team's strong performance with an 11th-place finish among 91 runners.
On the men's side, Luevano bested a field of 84 runners and finished the 6.4K course with a time of 19:45.2. Freshman Foster Malleck was the top freshman of the race in his collegiate debut, finishing in 10th place with a time of 20:35.2. Junior Jonathan Fierro came in a tenth of a second behind Malleck to take 11th and help BU finish third overall. For their efforts, Luevano was named PL Runner of the Week while Malleck earned PL Rookie of the Week honors. The Terriers remained 12th in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region rankings after their season opener.
Following Friday's race, the Terriers will return to competition for the Paul Short Run at Lehigh on Oct. 5.
