WAKEFIELD, Mass. - The No. 9 Boston University women's ice hockey team was picked to finish second by Hockey East coaches in the league's preseason poll that was released on Friday.
The Terriers, who finished second in last year's standings thanks to an 18-6-3 mark in conference play, garnered one first-place vote and 82 points in the annual poll, just eight points behind Northeastern. Boston College (71 points) was picked to finish third, followed by UConn (64), Providence (56), New Hampshire (52), Maine (41), Vermont (39), Merrimack (24) and Holy Cross (21).
BU returns 17 letter winners from last year's squad that went 24-8-4 overall. Senior co-captains Nara Elia and Jesse Compher are the team's leading returning scorers, with Elia posting a career-high 30 points (11g, 19a) last year. Senior goaltender Corinne Schroeder is back after she set new single-season program records last season when she ranked fourth in the NCAA with a .943 save percentage and was fifth among all NCAA goaltenders with a 1.54 goals-against average, and she will be joined between the pipes by junior Kate Stuart, who posted an impressive 8-1-1 record in 2019-20 with a .938 save percentage and a 1.58 goals-against average.
Senior Kristina Schuler and junior Kaleigh Donnelly will serve as assistant captains in head coach Brian Durocher's 16th season at the helm of the program. Both Schuler (8g, 13a) and Donnelly (4g, 13a) posted career highs in goals and points last year.
BU will open its 2020-21 schedule on Friday, Dec. 4, when the Terriers begin a two-game series at Maine.
