BOSTON - Alexandra Calderone of the Boston University women's ice hockey team was presented with the Paul Lewis Student-Athlete Service Award on Monday during The Rhettys' online ceremony.
The Paul Lewis Student-Athlete Service Award recognizes a senior student-athlete who has demonstrated a commitment to serving Boston University, the Department of Athletics, and the larger Boston community over the course of their time at BU. Award recipients have exhibited this commitment through involvement in campus organizations and activities, volunteer work, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, University and/or Athletics Department committees, and other service oriented activities.
Calderone was a terrific ambassador for the University during her four years on campus, consistently volunteering her time both on campus and in the city of Boston. In January, she organized a trip to Community Servings, where she and her teammates prepared and packaged meals for individuals and families living with critical and chronic illnesses. Additionally, she served as a registrar for the Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk each fall and also helped raise over $5,000 for Hockey East's Skating Strides against Breast Cancer initiative. Calderone also volunteered with the Special Olympics of Boston and at the Travis Roy Wiffle ball tournament. Last summer, she was awarded an internship with the Travis Roy Foundation, an organization that continues to search for a cure for spinal injuries.
In addition to her generosity in the community, Calderone was a fantastic leader for her team on the ice and in the classroom. She saved her best for last this season, securing a career-best six assists while appearing in all 36 games. A terrific defender, Calderone blocked 36 shots as part onf one of the top defensive teams in the country. She was a three-time selection to the Hockey East All-Academic Team and will graduate this May from the Questrom School of Business.
The late Paul Lewis (CGS '83, SHA '85), a Boston University football All-American and a mentor to numerous inner-city children in Boston, was honored by the BU Department of Athletics in Spring 2019 with the Student-Athlete Service Award being named in his honor. Lewis, who passed away suddenly in September 2018 at the age of 55, was a two-time All-America running back for Terriers and led them to three consecutive NCAA Division I-AA Tournament appearances. As a senior, Lewis was the recipient of the Mickey Cochrane Award as the University's Male Athlete of the Year.
