BOSTON – Recognized as Boston University's top athletes, senior Max Mahoney (men's basketball) took home the Mickey Cochrane Award, while both junior Ali DuBois (softball) and senior Abigail Gugel (women's cross country/track & field) made claim to the Mildred Barnes Award during the online ceremony for the 2019-20 Rhettys on Monday.
A 2020 Lou Henson All-American and Patriot League Tournament MVP, Mahoney became the first men's basketball player in nine years to earn the Mickey Cochrane Award. Named in honor of an outstanding performer in baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, and boxing, who was later inducted into both the Boston University Hall of Fame and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, the award is presented to the student who is chosen by the Athletic Department as the top male athlete of the year, regardless of class. Mahoney led the 2020 PL champion Terriers in points (15.5 ppg), rebounds (8.3 rpg), steals (1.1 spg) and blocks (0.5 bpg) while also ranking second in assists (2.6 apg). In the PL semifinals against Bucknell, the two-time team captain became just the fourth in program history to reach 1,500 points and 700 rebounds. Owner of All-PL First Team and USBWA All-District accolades, he posted a double-double in six of his last seven games and finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the PL title win at top-seed Colgate. The Basking Ridge, New Jersey, native earlier recorded a career-high 38 points at Binghamton and nearly once had a triple double with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists vs. Army.
Ranked No. 3 all-time at BU with 60 career wins in under two-and-a-half seasons, DuBois is the first-ever pitcher to earn the Mildred Barnes Award, while the 2019 PL Individual Cross Country champion Gugel is the first distance runner since 2009 to be recognized. Named in honor of a Hall of Fame member who received three Boston University degrees, and who was an outstanding performer in badminton, lacrosse, tennis, and six other sports, the award is presented to the Boston University student who is chosen by the Athletic Department as the top female athlete of the year, regardless of class. DuBois entered her junior campaign as a two-time PL Pitcher of the Year and 2020 USA Softball Player of the Year Top-50 Watch List member. Though softball's season was cut short, she was able to display her dominance in the circle, earning all four available PL Pitcher of the Week awards with a combined 9-5 record and 1.44 ERA. During BU's first-ever 8-0 start, she collected five wins and added two saves. The Torrington, Connecticut, native pitched three shutouts, including a three-hit performance against ACC member Virginia, and also tossed four no-hit innings at then-No. 21 Arkansas. Boosted by 95 strikeouts in 87.1 innings of work, she now ranks fifth all-time at BU and eighth in the PL with 488 career strikeouts.
Gugel began the 2019 cross country season with a win at the Harry Lang Invitational and added another top-five finish at the Princeton Invitational, where she crossed the line in fourth to lead BU to its second of three team titles. The Jordan, New York, native then shined brightest at the PL Championship, cruising to a 16-second victory with a 6K time of 21:41.2 to lead the Terriers to their first PL cross country title since 2014 and third overall. Last spring, she recorded a personal best time of 17:11.17 in the 5,000-meter run to place first at the PL Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also took fourth in the 10,000m run with a time of 34:57.36.
