BOSTON - Three Boston University student-athletes – Lily Burchell (women's tennis), Christina Lamagna (women's rowing) and Shannon Ma (field hockey) – have been named recipients of the prestigious Scarlet Key Award in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.
The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.
Named a team captain as a junior, Burchell has received accolades on the court as well as in the classroom, collecting 2019 Patriot League All-Conference Second Team honors while also being a 2018 ITA Scholar-Athlete selection. Adding to her list of accomplishments, Burchell is a key figure within the athletic department as she is the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and sits on the Athletic Director's Student Advisory Board.
Lamagna evolved from a novice with no prior rowing experience to a seasoned varsity coxswain and respected and reliable team leader. Owning a 3.90 GPA as a film and television major and biology minor, Lamagna has served as a writer, editor, camera operator, cinematographer, and production designer for a wide range of projects, including working with local nonprofits, Mass STEM Hub, and on a short documentary with an alumna chronicling the founding of the BU women's rowing team in 1973.
Ma, who has earned starts in a combined 23 games over the past two seasons for the field hockey team, has already left an indelible mark serving in roles within the athletic department as well as the campus community. She is currently the secretary of SAAC and a member of BU's Student Occupational Therapy Association. Additionally, she was a panel member at the 2019 NCAA Inclusion Forum and is a coach for Strong Girls United, a non-profit teaching elementary school aged girls about fitness, mental skills and mindfulness practices, and has coached Special Olympics athletes. Furthermore, she is a three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.
The annual Scarlet Key tapping ceremony will take place later this fall and the formal induction will be held on May 13, 2021, as part of the festivities for Commencement week.
