Canceled last fall due to the CoVID pandemic, the Regatta annually attracts more than 11,000 athletes competing in more than 2,000 boats and has been expanded this year to three days with 64 total events taking place. The men's and women's senior-veteran singles competition will kick off the Regatta on Friday at 8 a.m. The ages of rowers range from 17-year-old youth rowers to athletes in their 90s. Men
The BU men's rowing team will send out four boats to compete over the weekend and will be seeing its first action since the varsity eight boat won the petite final and the varsity four claimed bronze in the grand final at the IRA National Championship Regatta back in May. Two years ago at the HOCR, BU recorded four top-10 finishes among U.S. colleges. The men's club eights will start things off on Saturday at 12:25 p.m. with two boats taking to the water.
BU will have two more boats race on Sunday with the championship fours starting at 1:16 p.m. and the championship eights wrapping up the competition at 1:49 p.m.
"The Head of the Charles always brings an immense amount of excitement to DeWolfe Boathouse," said head coach Thomas Bohrer. "Even more so this year with the regatta being canceled last year. There is a lot of pride within the team in that the world or rowing comes to Boston. The weekend is always a celebration of rowing, and we look forward to being part of it. We will be racing four boats total over the weekend, and the line-ups have come together well over the last week when we made final line-ups. The boathouse will be open for viewing for our alumni, family and friends, so we hope to see many of them back at DeWolfe."
Women - Openweights
The BU women's openweight rowing team will start the Regatta with two boats racing on Saturday, first in the club fours at 12:27 p.m. and then the club eights at 1:11 p.m. The program will be on the water for the first time since placing third at the Patriot League Championship back in May. At the last HOCR in 2019, notable results included a sixth place finish overall out of 55 boats in the club fours and a 17th place result among U.S. collegians in the championship eights that saw the Terriers finish ahead of several notable "A" boats, including crews from Cornell, Dartmouth and Rhode Island.
On Sunday, BU will race in the championship fours at 1:30 p.m. and conclude the competition with the championship eights at 2:25 p.m.
"The team is thrilled to return to the Head of the Charles for the first time since fall 2019," said head coach Madeline Davis Tully. "In fact, the whole rowing community is celebrating the return of one of our greatest events. We will be racing four crews, in addition to the alumnae 8+. We're looking forward to seeing how this group can perform against great competition from around the country and globe. We're also excited to welcome family, friends and alumnae back to the DeWolfe Boathouse."
Women - Lightweights
The BU women's lightweight rowing team is the only program to have already competed this fall after going up against openweight crews in the Collegiate 8+ Division I race at the Head of the Housatonic back on Oct. 9. The Terriers' top boat placed fifth out of 25. This past spring, BU wrapped up the season with seniors Kathryn Grabowski and Grace Beery winning the program's third-ever gold medal in the double sculls at the IRA National Championship Regatta. The varsity four boat added the silver to the medal haul with a runner-up finish.
The Terriers will race on Sunday starting with two boats in the lightweight championship fours at 1:30 p.m. and conclude their participation in the lightweight championship eights at 2:25 p.m.
"BU 130 is excited to continue our fall racing campaign at the Head of the Charles Regatta," said head coach Malcolm Doldron. "The HOCR is an incredible experience for all of our student athletes, with alumni, parents, friends and fans all converging on the shorelines. There's an energy around the river this weekend that's palpable, and we are looking forward to performing at a high level on one of Rowing's biggest stages."
Alumni and Staff
BU boatman Russ Cone and men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer will race on Friday starting at 8:45 a.m. in the men's grand master singles competition. The men's alumni boat will take to the water Saturday at 11:26 a.m. with both the women's openweight and lightweight alumnae boats racing at 11:46 a.m.
There will also be a boat featured in the director's challenge mixed eights event in the final competition for the HOCR starting at 3:59 p.m.
