Commesso Named to U.S. National Junior Team
December 14, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Sophomore Drew Commesso of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named to the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, USA Hockey announced on Tuesday.
Commesso is one of three goaltenders on the 25-player roster and is projected to be the No. 1 goaltender for the United States. He last represented his country at the 2021 IIHF World Championship this past May, winning a bronze medal. The Norwell, Mass., native has played some of his best hockey of late, posting a .948 save percentage over his last five Hockey East starts. Commesso allowed just one goal in three of those five appearances to help the Terriers enter the semester break on a four-game league unbeaten streak.
No stranger to wearing a Team USA sweater, Commesso went 5-1-0 in international competition in 2019-20, posting a 1.47 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage. He was the primary goaltender for the 2019-20 U.S. Under-18 Team and the 2018-19 U.S. Under-17 Team during his two years with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program.
Team USA will face Slovakia in its first preliminary matchup on Dec. 26, with opening faceoff set for 9:30 p.m. ET. All of the U.S. games throughout the tournament will be televised live on NHL Network.
