Farrance Repeats as Hobey Baker Top-10 Finalist
March 17, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the second time in as many years senior defenseman David Farrance of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in men's college hockey.
Farrance joins Chris Drury as the only Terriers to repeat as a Hobey Baker top-10 finalist. Drury earned the honor three straight years, culminated by him becoming the first player in program history to receive the prestigious award.
A two-time Hockey First Team All-Star, Farrance has 16 points in 10 games this season, tallying five goals and 11 assists. His 1.60 points-per-game average ranks first nationally among defensemen and fourth overall. He was named Hockey East Player of the Month for January after putting up 14 points (4g, 10a) in just six contests. Farrance had five multi-point efforts in the first six games to get the Terriers off to a good start as he tallied a goal in four straight wins from Jan. 9 to Jan. 22.
Farrance was selected as a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award for the second straight year and was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Jan. 25 after receiving Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Jan. 11.
Last year as a junior, Farrance was a CCM/ACHA First Team All-American and he received the Bob Monahan Award, given annually to the top college hockey defenseman in New England.
In 2019-20, Farrance led all Division I blueliners in points (43), goals (14) and power-play goals (9) and finished sixth overall in points nationally. His 1.26 points-per-game average was the highest of any Hockey East defenseman in 25 years and his 43 points were the most of any BU d-man in the Hockey East era.
This marks the 15th time in program history that a Boston University player is among the top 10 Hobey Baker finalists, who are selected by voting from all 61 Division I college hockey head coaches plus online fan balloting.
Next, the 30-member Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting through the Hobey website (hobeybaker.com) will determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award include: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
