BOSTON – The Boston University Department of Athletics surpassed $1 million in gifts for the fourth straight BU Giving Day as over $1.2 million was raised in support of Terrier student-athletes on Wednesday, April 7.

Athletics Giving Day Chair Timothy Burr (MET'97) headed up this year's efforts, which resulted in over 2,500 gifts and impressive participation by young alumni as over 20 percent of the gifts came from student-athletes from the Classes 2006-20.

"With all the challenges that we've faced this year, this was an incredibly special day for our department," said director of athletics Drew Marrochello. "Seeing how important BU Athletics is to so many is gratifying and humbling. The participation numbers were remarkable and that's certainly a reflection of the hard work done by our coaches and staff. I'd like to thank [executive director of annual giving] Scott Graham and [senior associate director of athletics] Brittany Kane for their impressive efforts and also give a special thanks to Timothy Burr for his passion and generosity."
 
Over the past four BU Giving Days, nearly $5 million has been raised for Athletics. This year's final tally of $1,205,973 represented 40 percent of the close to $3 million raised in total across campus. 

"I was in awe of the generosity shown by so many individuals on this year's Giving Day," said Burr. "The willingness to support the tremendous student-athletes and all of the dedication members of the Boston University Athletics community speaks volumes about both their continued efforts though these times and the benevolence of the greater BU community.  Thank you to all who participated."

Team revenue head-to-head challenges took place with each varsity program matched up against another. Women's lacrosse, men's ice hockey, men's tennis, men's lacrosse, women's track & field, men's track & field, women's soccer, field hockey, women's golf and women's basketball were all victorious in their head-to-head match-ups to earn an additional $2,000 each. 

In addition, each unique gift made by a current student-athlete to the Athletics fund of their choice was matched dollar for dollar up to $20.
