BOSTON – Reaching the halfway point of the Patriot League schedule, the Boston University softball team will visit Bucknell over the weekend for a pair of doubleheaders. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The four-game series could prove critical in determining the No. 1 seed in the upcoming four-team PL tournament, as the Terriers (9-1) and Bison (7-1) both have just one loss apiece. BU had its PL record-breaking 17-game win streak and NCAA-leading 28-game home win streak snapped during last Friday's DH split against Army but bounced back with a DH sweep over the Black Knights. The Terriers are currently riding a 10-game road win streak that ranks sixth in the country.
Two-time PL Player of the Week and senior
Jen Horita leads BU at .500 with nine RBIs, while both sophomore
Caitlin Coker (.369) and freshman
Lauren Keleher (.311) own a team-high 17 runs apiece. Junior
Nicole Amodio (.294) leads the Terriers with 18 RBIs and six extra-base hits (four doubles, two homers). As a team, BU is hitting .296 with a 31-3 advantage in stolen bases and 14-10 edge in homers.
In the circle, BU collected two of its 10 shutouts last weekend against Army. Senior
Ali DuBois (14-0, 0.66 ERA) ranks No. 2 in the PL in both career wins (74) and ERA (1.52) with the help of 79 strikeouts in 85.0 innings this season. Sophomore
Allison Boaz (4-0, 2.16 ERA) and junior
Emily Gant (2-2, 1.57 ERA) have combined for 39 strikeouts in 54.2 innings. Overall, BU's pitching staff is holding opponents to a .169 batting average.
The Bison haven't competed since a 3-1 performance at Holy Cross on April 3-4 due to last Sunday's DH at Coppin State being canceled by rain. Nicole Rivalt and Zoie Smith are batting an identical .388 with Taylor Wolfgang close behind at .366. The trio has combined for 48 RBIs and 40 runs scored with the help of 11 homers.
Kaiya Burton (4-2, 3.41 ERA) has tallied 32 strikeouts in 41.0 innings, while Olivia Marinelli (2-2, 2.78 ERA) has 29 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. They both have one save apiece, while Kelly Toomey (4.80 ERA) owns a perfect 4-0 record. Overall, Bucknell is holding opponents to a .261 batting average.
BU is 12-7 all-time in the series against Bucknell with a 3-4 road mark. The Terriers earned a DH split in 2019 with a 3-2 win and 4-1 loss after winning both games in 2017 in Lewisburg by a combined score of 8-5. Five of the last nine meetings between the two programs have been decided by one run apiece.
