BU Begins Spring Season Victorious at FDU Invitational
April 3, 2021 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - The Boston University golf team began its spring season in the best possible way, as the Terriers won the FDU Invitational on Saturday at the Penn National Golf Club & Inn.
BU, which was tied with host Fairleigh Dickinson after Friday's first round, held off the Knights by one shot on Saturday to earn the team title. The Terriers combined for a 304 on Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 618 (314-304).
"It's great to start the spring season with a win," head coach Bruce Chalas said. "The team played well on the back nine today. All the hard work by all the players in practice this week paid off, and we have a good base to improve. We're excited to be back playing."
Graduate student Zhangcheng Guo was instrumental in the victory, as she made a great up and down from the bunker on her final hole of the day to finish the afternoon with a one-over 73, the low round of the afternoon. Her slippery six-foot putt closed out a one-under 35 on the back nine, and it proved to be the difference as it clinched the Terriers' first team title since the 2019 William & Mary Invitational.
Guo led the Terriers individually with a 36-hole score of 151 (78-73) to finish fourth, just four shots behind the leader. Freshman Flair Kuan fired a final-round 77 to tie for fifth at 155 while sophomore Alice Fan recorded back-to-back 78s to finish one shot back of Kuan in a tie for seventh. Junior Hanako Kawasaki battled back after a tough opening round to card a 76 and finish in a tie for 11th with a total of 160 (84-76). Sophomore Kristen Min Ju Kim tied for 19th with a total of 163.
BU will continue its spring schedule on April 9 when the Terriers tee off at the Hartford Invitational.
