Lafayette Edges Men's Soccer in OT, 1-0
September 25, 2021 | Men's Soccer
EASTON, Pa. – Following 90 minutes of scoreless action, Lafayette struck early in overtime to edge the Boston University men's soccer team, 1-0, at Oaks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Suffering heart break in OT for the second time in three contests, the Terriers drop to 1-5-1 (1-1-0 PL), while the Leopards improve to 5-3-1 (1-0-1 PL).
"That was a hard game today," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "We struggled to gain consistent rhythm in the second half and we paid for it in overtime. We now look forward to our midweek conference game on the road."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Making his first appearance of the season at net, sophomore Andrew Wike earned a save in the first minute off a shot from Hale Lombard, who later went wide at 5:05.
- Reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Week Quinn Matulis forced a save from Alex Sutton in the 20th minute.
- Former PL Rookie of the Week Brian Hernandez put a pair of shots on goal at 28:45 and 31:51, but Sutton came up again to keep the game scoreless.
- Sophomore Matthew Boberg recorded BU's fifth and what proved to be the final attempt on goal in the final seconds of the half.
- After recording a 7-5 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes of action, the Leopards held the Terriers to just two total the rest of the way while earning five of their own.
- After Wike stopped another Lombard shot at 61:03, senior Gianluca Arlotti earned a corner with a blocked shot attempt, but the Terriers were unable to convert.
- Graduate student Peter Kargbo's attempt was blocked as well for BU's fifth corner, which led to a dangerous ball at the near post before being cleared by the Leopards.
- Lafayette had three quick corners in succession from 78:30-79:40, but BU's backline was able to successfully keep the Leopards off the scoreboard to force OT.
- Just 64 seconds into the extra session, Lafayette put the game away by sending a long cross into the box to set up Carter Houlihan's centering header and Yiannis Panayides' flick of the ball that went high over Wike into the back of the net.
- Wike had four saves, while Sutton earned five for his third shutout of the season.
- Hernandez and Kargbo both had two shots apiece, while Lombard recorded four.
- Lafayette finished ahead in both shots, 13-7, and corners, 6-5.
- The Leopards struck late against BU for the second consecutive game following an 89th minute goal back in the spring at Nickerson Field.
- BU will remain on the road and visit Army West Point on Wednesday (Sept. 29) with a 6 p.m. start time.
- The Terriers are 8-3-3 all-time in the series following a 1-1 draw at home this past spring.
