BOSTON - Members of the Boston University women's ice hockey and lightweight rowing teams volunteered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the DCR Hatch Shell on Sunday, Sept. 26.
The Terriers in attendance cheered on the cancer survivors and their supporters along the 2- and 5-mile routes at the event.
The country's oldest one-day breast cancer walk, Making Strides celebrated its 29th edition as thousands walked along the Esplanade to raise funds for th American Cancer Society. The event raises awareness about the importance of breast cancer screenings and aims to ensure all women and men can prevent, find, treat and survive breast cancer.
"As a team we look forward to the event every year," said women's ice hockey captain Kaleigh Donnelly. "We weren't able to participate last year, so it was really special that we could go out together on Sunday and cheer on everybody."

"It was really special to get back out into our community after being unable to participate in outreach events last year," said senior Kathryn Grabowski of the lightweight rowing team. "It was very uplifting to cheer on cancer survivors, their families, and their friends as they walked to raise awareness for breast cancer. It was great to be able to chat with some of the participants as they passed by our station. It was an extremely humbling and inspiring event to partake in."

"It felt amazing to recognize and support people who were not just walking for the cause, but also for their friends and family who have directly or indirectly experienced the effects of breast cancer," said Alexandra Deshaw of the lightweight rowing team. "It brought me so much joy to see the community out and in action!"
