Terriers Drop Regular Season Finale To Black Knights, 3-2

BOSTON - Despite game-tying goals from seniors Julianna Stureman and Sophia Woodland, the Boston University women's soccer program fell to Army West Point in a 3-2 heartbreaker on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.

With the result, BU (10-8, 6-3 PL) locks in the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. The Black Knights (8-4-6, 6-1-2 PL) capture the 2022 regular season chmapionship.

Stureman found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 36th minute to level the score at 1-1. Army later pulled ahead, only for Woodland to convert a header in the 81st minute for the equalizer. However, Kaelan Bradley scored with 37 seconds to play to seal the Army victory.

Redshirt senior Jenna Oldham and junior Lily Matthews each had two shots on goal to lead the Terriers. Senior Gretchen Bennett collected three second-half saves.

In addition to Bradley, Lauren Drysdale and Brigid Duffy scored for the Black Knights. Sage Strohman made four saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU generated back-to-back corner kicks in the ninth minute, but Army's defense kept the Terriers from recording a shot.
  • In the 12th minute, a BU handball in their own box led to a penalty kick, where Drysdale converted in the lower-left corner.
  • The Terriers earned a free kick in the 18th minute, as Oldham ripped a shot right to Strohman in net. Drysdale's attempt for a brace shortly thereafter sailed above the crossbar.
  • Stureman converted in the 36th minute when Oldham's insert wasn't cleanly cleared by a Black Knight. The ball floated in the air to Stureman, who flicked it upper-middle over Strohman's head.
  • The first half closed with three straight Army corners, one of which led to redshirt senior Amy Thompson making a team save with a denial at the goal line on Drysdale.
  • In the 55th minute, the BU back line attempted to dispossess Bradley near the left corner, but she put enough on a pass to Duffy for her to beat Bennett by the left post.
  • Moments later, Matthews worked into the right corner to place a right-footed shot on net, but Strohman collected it.
  • Oldham had another chance on a direct kick from nearly 30 yards out in the 76th minute, but a crouching Strohman snagged the bouncing shot.
  • The Terriers once again found the equalizer in the 81st minute when Oldham swung a corner kick into the box. Woodland met the header, and the ball crossed the goal line before a Black Knight defender cleared it out.
  • Matthews nearly put BU ahead in the 85th minute on an open opportunity at the top of the box, but Strohman made the save.
  • Army took the lead for good when Elise Urkov sent a touch pass to Bradley before she was challenged. Bradley deked Bennett, who came out of the net, then beat a retreating Oldham on the goal line with a blast by the right post.

GAME NOTES
  • The Black Knights held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, including an 8-6 result in shots on target.
  • BU made five total saves to Army's four.
  • Stureman collected her second-career goal, with her previous tally coming on Sept. 25, 2019 against Stony Brook.
  • Woodland potted her fourth-career goal, and her first since Aug. 21 vs. Providence.
  • Bennett's three saves were her most since Sept. 4 against Boston College.
  • BU earns a top-three seed in the Patriot League Tournament for the eighth time in nine full seasons as a league member, withholding the 2020-21 campaign.
