NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Boston University women's ice hockey team fell to Merrimack, 5-2, in the opener of a home-and-home weekend series on Friday evening at Lawler Arena.

The Terriers, who got goals from junior Madison Cardaci and freshman Sydney Healey, held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the home team strung together four straight goals to take the win.

BU moves to 2-5-0 on the year and 1-4-0 in Hockey East play. The Warriors improve to 2-6-1 overall with a 1-5-1 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU got the first-power play chance of the game midway through the opening period and used it to get on the board first.
A good chance for Healey in the left slot was saved and junior Lacey Martin sent the rebound into a crowded goalmouth, as the puck went off sophomore Christina Vote and then fell in the crease, where Healey poked it home at the 10:55 mark.
The lead lasted only 28 seconds as Merrimack forced a neutral-zone turnover and Katie Kaufman skated in on the left side before beating BU goaltender Callie Shanahan to far post.
Cardaci ensured that the Terriers would head into the first intermission with a lead when she scored her first collegiate goal with 1:21 left in the opening stanza.
After getting the puck in the left circle from senior Julia Nearis, Martin spotted Cardaci skating down the slot and found her at the top of the crease for a tap-in.
The second period belonged to the home team as Tara Blackburn created the second tie of the contest with a goal at 6:56 of the frame before Kaufman gave the Warriors their first lead with her second tally of the contest with 2:51 left in the second.
A power-play marker by Merrimack's Allison Reeb at 6:19 of the third made it a 4-2 contest.
The scoring was capped by an empty-netter by Ally Qualley with 2:35 remaining in regulation.

GAME NOTES

Merrimack held a 29-24 shot advantage as Shanahan turned in a 24-save performance for BU.
Emma Gorski picked up the win in goal for the Warriors and made 22 saves in the process.
BU was 1-for-4 on the power play while Merrimack was 1-for-3.
Freshman Clara Yuhn had a game-best 13 faceoff wins.
