BOSTON – Three Boston University student-athletes – Maren Durant (women's basketball), Caitlin Coker (softball) and Rachel Borzymowski (field hockey) – have been named recipients of the prestigious Scarlet Key Award in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.
The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.
Selected as a team captain as a junior, Durant is an All-Patriot League standout who ranks in the top-five in program history in blocked shots while also earning Academic All-Patriot League accolades last season. Off the court, Durant is a member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy (BFLA), represents women's basketball on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a part of the Terriers Together Mentor Program leadership team. As a member of the leadership team, she is tasked with helping match our incoming first-years with their mentors, communicating with the student-athlete population, and executing the educational portion of each session. On campus, she is a part of Active Minds and the BU Nutrition and Dietetics Club. Durant is enrolled in Sargent College, majoring in behavioral health.
Voted team captain by her peers for her lead-by-example character, Coker is a two-time All-Patriot League First Team member, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Team recipient and a two-time Patriot League All-Academic Team selection. Recently, she was an NFCA All-Region Second Team selection and an All-ECAC honorable mention. She has greatly impacted the BU community as a member of SAAC and the Student-Athletes of Color organizations. Her goals off the field have been focused on making the BU community a better place for everyone as she is empowered by helping others. Additionally, she is involved in BFLA and is a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Coker is currently pursuing her master's of science in biology after receiving her bachelor's degree in biology from the College of Arts & Sciences.
A regional All-American and Patriot League First Team selection, Borzymowski excels on the field and in the classroom. She is a member of BFLA and is involved throughout the community. On campus, Rachel does work with the Sean Mullen's Genomic lab through which she makes butterfly facsimiles, which provided her an opportunity to participate in field research in Costa Rica at La Selva. She also helped the Boston University's student studio design a database for elementary school students to find art activities to do at home during the pandemic. Borzymowski volunteered by leading fitness classes at Hebrew Senior Living and at Brandywine Senior Living and also worked with the Marcus Institute for Aging Research to collect data in its Mobility and Falls study. With a 3.94 cumulative GPA, she is an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction as a biology major with a pre-med track.
The annual Scarlet Key tapping ceremony took place during Alumni Weekend, and the formal induction will be held in Mayas part of the Commencement festivities.
